Second Season Syndrome?

With a Capital One Cup third round exit at the hands of Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa, could this be Manchester City’s rockiest start to a season in recent years?

Eight games into their 2012/13 campaign and it seems that Manchester City are still having a hard time keeping a clean sheet. A shock 4-2 extra time defeat at the Etihad Stadium has Roberto Mancini scratching his head. City’s last clean sheet came early August in a pre-season friendly against Irish side Limerick FC.

It seems that Man City are having concentration lapses in defence as they are conceding goals in their games late on and struggling to keep their leads. Against Villa they gave away the lead twice then ultimately lost the game in extra time, a repeat of their bouts with Arsenal and the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid – lost in the last five minutes after they led 2-1 with an 85th minute goal by substitute Edin Dzeko.

With the Premier League champions next league clash away to Fulham and a test at home against German league winners Borrusia Dortmund, what lies ahead for Mancini’s men?
