The Lakers Honor Shaquille O’Neal By Retiring His Number “34″
At halftime of yesterday’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers, the Lakers retired the number 34 jersey worn by Shaquille O’Neal during his 1996-2004 tenure with the club.
Shaq, No. 6 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, joins Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabaar among those honored in the rafters at the Staples Center. In O’Neal’s eight seasons with the Lakers, he won three back-to-back championships (three NBA Finals MVPs) and the 2000 Most Valuable Player award.
O’Neal dedicated the night to the late Dr. Jerry Buss, thanked his mum and six children then saluted (literally) his father. When it came time for former coach Phil Jackson’s thank you O’Neal was interrupted by the Staples Center crowd’s “We want Phil” chant. To which he responded, “I want Phil, too”. O’Neal also thanked his Hollywood friends like legendary Lakers fan Jack Nicholson and “good friend” Adam Sandler.
With just two weeks left of this 2012-13 season, maybe this can be the uplift the Lakers needed to get their season back on track and make that last playoff spot.
